Many first-timers in 2026 plan a Busan trip around the beaches and then realise they have two or three spare days with no idea where to go. Google Maps still gives poor transit directions in Korea, and bus terminal signs can be confusing. The five trips below are the simplest ones: clear transport, one main area to focus on, and an easy way back by evening.
How Day Trips From Busan Work in 2026
Two stations matter. Busan Station is for KTX trains to Gyeongju and Daegu, and some Ulsan services. The Busan Seobu (West) Bus Terminal in Sasang, on Line 2, is for Tongyeong and Geoje. Gyeongju and Ulsan also have buses from the Nopo-dong terminal at the northern end of Line 1.
Use Naver Map or KakaoMap for directions. They show live bus arrivals, which Google Maps still does poorly. Book trains in the Korail app or on the Korail website, and book buses in advance on weekends and holidays. Your T-Money card works on local buses and metros in Gyeongju, Ulsan and Daegu. Kakao T now accepts many foreign cards for taxis, which helps in smaller towns where buses run less often.
Listen for the beep of your card at the bus reader. If it beeps twice, the payment failed. Try again before you sit down.
Gyeongju: The Easiest Culture Trip
Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla kingdom for nearly a thousand years. It is the best first day trip because the sights are close together and the history is easy to see.
Getting there: The KTX from Busan Station to Singyeongju takes about 30 to 35 minutes. Local buses then take you into the old town in about 25 minutes. The intercity bus from Nopo-dong takes around an hour and drops you closer to the centre.
What to see: Start with Bulguksa Temple and the Seokguram Grotto in the morning, before tour groups arrive. Go back to town for Daereungwon, the grassy royal tomb park, and Cheomseongdae, the old observatory. Finish at Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond at dusk, when the pavilions are lit up. You will want your phone out as the lights reflect on the water.
Ulsan: Bamboo, Cliffs and Whale History
Ulsan is known as an industrial city, but its nature spots are better than most visitors expect. It is also the quickest trip on this list.
Getting there: The KTX to Ulsan Station takes about 20 to 25 minutes. The station is outside the city centre, so plan on a bus or taxi of roughly 30 minutes to the main sights. Buses from Nopo-dong take about an hour and are often easier.
What to see: Walk the Taehwagang Bamboo Garden, where the tall stalks creak and rustle in the wind. Then head to Daewangam Park, a pine-covered coastal area with sea cliffs and a rocky shoreline. If you have time left, Jangsaengpo Whale Culture Village shows Ulsan’s old whaling history and has a small museum. Entry to the bamboo garden and Daewangam Park is free.
Tongyeong: Seafood and Harbour Views
Tongyeong is a small port city on the south coast, often called the “Naples of Korea” for its bay and hills. It is a good choice if you want a slower day with great food.
Getting there: Take an express bus from Busan Seobu Terminal. It takes about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours and costs around 15,000 KRW ($11). Buses run frequently, so you can usually buy a ticket on the day on weekdays.
What to see: Walk the colourful Dongpirang Mural Village, then ride the Mireuksan cable car for a view over the islands. Tongyeong Jungang Market is the food stop. You will smell grilled fish and sweet fried dough before you see the stalls. Try chungmu gimbap (small rice rolls with spicy squid and radish) and kkul-ppang (honey-filled pastry). A late lunch of fresh seafood near the harbour is also a good idea.
Geoje: Islands, Bridges and Gardens
Geoje is Korea’s second-largest island, joined to the mainland by the Busan-Geoje Bridge and tunnel. It works well for visitors who like sea views and a bit of walking.
Getting there: Buses from Busan Seobu Terminal to Gohyeon, Geoje’s main town, take about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic. Public transport around the island is slow, so choose two or three stops rather than trying to see everything.
What to see: Oedo Botania is a botanical island reached by a short ferry, and the gardens look good in any season. Back on Geoje, Windy Hill has open grassland and a famous windmill, and the nearby Haegeumgang cliffs are best seen by boat. The Geoje POW Camp Museum is a short stop for history. Taxis from Gohyeon between sights are worth the cost to save time.
Daegu: A Big-City Trip by KTX
Daegu is Korea’s fourth-largest city, and it gives a different feel from Busan: inland, drier, and known for strong food and old markets.
Getting there: The KTX from Busan Station to Dongdaegu Station takes about an hour. From there, the Daegu metro connects to the main areas. Your T-Money card works on the metro and buses.
What to see: Walk through Seomun Market, then the colonial-era Dongseongro shopping streets. The Apsan Cable Car goes up for city views, and Kim Gwang-seok Street is a short walk with murals and cafes. For food, try jjim-galbi (braised spicy beef ribs) or napjak-mandu (flat fried dumplings). Summers here are very hot, so choose spring or autumn if you can.
Day Trip Budget Reality in 2026
Prices below are per person for transport, entry fees and food, using about 1,350 KRW = 1 USD.
- Budget (30,000–50,000 KRW / $22–37): Intercity bus, local buses, one or two paid entries, and a market lunch. Tongyeong and Ulsan fit this range easily.
- Mid-range (60,000–100,000 KRW / $44–74): KTX to Gyeongju or Daegu, a cable car or ferry ticket, a sit-down lunch and a coffee. Bulguksa is about 6,000 KRW ($4.50) to enter.
- Comfortable (120,000–200,000 KRW / $89–148): KTX with reserved seats, taxis between sights, a seafood or barbecue dinner and extra attractions. This suits Geoje, where taxis make a big difference.
Prices change slightly each year, so check ticket fees on Naver Map before you go.
Matching the Trip to the Season
Each trip has a best time of year. Spring suits Gyeongju, where cherry blossoms fill the tomb park and Wolji Pond. In late March and early April, the Jinhae cherry blossom festival near Changwon also draws crowds, though it is harder to visit as a casual day trip. Summer is better for Geoje and Tongyeong, with sea breezes and boat rides, while Daegu is too hot. Autumn is the best all-round time, and Gyeongju and Ulsan look especially good. Winter is quiet and cold, but Gyeongju is peaceful and Tongyeong seafood is at its best.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the easiest day trip from Busan for a first-timer?
Gyeongju is the easiest. The KTX takes about 30 to 35 minutes, the main sights are close together, and the history is easy to follow without a guide. Ulsan is faster by train, but Gyeongju has more famous places and clearer signs in English.
Do I need a car for day trips from Busan?
No. All five trips work by train, bus, taxi and T-Money. A car helps only on Geoje, where buses are slow. Even there, you can hire taxis between sights, and Kakao T makes this simple. Driving in Korea also needs an international licence and a confident reading of local signs.
Can I use T-Money for intercity travel from Busan?
T-Money works on local buses and metros in most cities, including Gyeongju, Ulsan and Daegu. It does not cover KTX or most express buses, which need separate tickets. Buy those in the Korail app, at a station counter, or at the bus terminal kiosk.
How early should I leave Busan for a day trip?
Leave by 8:00 or 8:30 a.m. for Tongyeong and Geoje, since the bus ride is long. For Gyeongju, Ulsan and Daegu, a 9:00 a.m. KTX still gives you a full day. Always check the last return bus or train before you start sightseeing.
Which day trip is best in winter?
Gyeongju is the best winter choice. The tourist crowds are small, the temples look calm, and the lit-up Wolji Pond is striking on cold evenings. Tongyeong is also good for fresh seafood and oysters. Geoje can be windy and cold, so it is better in warmer months.
